How To Navigate Hail Damaged Roofs

Spot Hail Damaged Roofs

Storm season has finally passed, and we are starting the dog days of summer. How did your roof fair during tornado and hail season? These hot summer days are the perfect time to take a look to see what kind of maintenance, if any, you need done on your roof to make sure it is in tip-top shape. Here are the top four signs to spot hail damaged roofs:

Check for missing shingles.

Something missing from your rooftop? That’s the No. 1 indicator that it’s time to call a roofer for a free estimate. If anything appears to be missing from your roof, that means that you’ve had some sort of weather damage.

Get your mind in the gutter.

While inspecting your roof, take a peek at the gutters and look for dents. If you have hail damage on the gutters and downspouts, the likelihood of damage to your shingles increases.

Grab the ladder.

Your roof may look fine from below, but you need to take a closer look by getting up eye-level to your shingles. Keep your eyes open for dents or bruising on the shingles. This is a clear sign of hail damage. If you aren’t seeing dents, look for any cracking on the shingles. That’s another sign of damage that needs to be repaired.

Damage Myths

Hail damage is fairly common in Oklahoma. In fact, according to the Insurance Information Institute, Oklahoma ranks as the fifth top state for hail damage and claims. Because there are so many hail damage claims in our state, there is a lot of false information out there. Keep these hail damage myths in mind when looking for damage.

Myth No. 1: You cannot detect hail damage. You can definitely spot some hail damage with an untrained eye and file a claim.

Myth No. 2: If your roof isn’t leaking, you do not have hail damage. This is another misconception. A roof leak may be a result of hail damage. However, it takes time for hail damage to result in a leak. It is a good idea to have your roof inspected before it gets to that point.

Myth No. 3: If the neighbor’s roof has hail damage, mine does too. If your neighbor experienced hail damage and is having their roof replaced, it’s probably a good idea to call a professional in for an inspection. However, damage on their roof doesn’t necessarily mean you need a full roof replacement.
Myth No. 4: If your roof has minor damage, it doesn’t need repairs. False, if your roof has any damage it’s important to file a claim. Mild damage today can turn into roof leaks or a roof failure tomorrow. Take care of the problems while it’s minimal.
